Jeevan R. Mathura, Jr., M.D., was born and raised in Washington, DC. He completed undergraduate studies at Georgetown University with a cum laude distinction. He then graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine where he developed an interest in research and surgery. He was selected as an Intramural Research Training Award Fellow at the National Institutes of Health and conducted a year of research where he studied neurotransmitter receptor biology. He then completed two years of general surgery training at LA County/USC Medical Center and the Washington Hospital Center. As he wanted to continue research and pursue a career in ophthalmology, he then became a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Wilmer Eye Institute - Johns Hopkins University, in the Retinal Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory. He then completed an ophthalmology residency at Nassau University Medical Center/SUNY Stonybrook and completed a prestigious fellowship in Diseases of the Retina at Northwestern University.
Before Dr. Mathura founded Diabetic Eye DC, he was an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and an attending physician at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Co-Director of the Vitreoretinal Service at the George Washington University for a combined 12 years. In both of these roles, Dr. Mathura taught and lectured medical students, residents and ophthalmology fellows. He also was the principal investigator and co-investigator in multiple clinical trials and authored journal articles and book chapters. He became a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology in 2004 and was re-certified by the ABO in 2014.
Dr. Mathura is an avid reader and keeps current with medical literature and cutting edge treatments and technology. Because of his experience and knowledge in the field, his expertise is frequently sought after by other ophthalmologists, medical doctors in other specialties, optometrists and other professionals.

Dr. Mathura has been happily married for over 16 years and enjoys the privilege of raising three, school-aged children.
